The Challenge

Twitter wanted to enter the social audio space with a product that felt authentically Twitter — conversational, public, and accessible. We needed to design an entirely new content type that worked within Twitter's existing information architecture.

My Role

As Senior Design Manager, I led the design team through the entire product lifecycle — from early concept exploration through launch and iteration. I managed 5 designers and worked closely with the VP of Product.

The Approach

Understanding the Opportunity

Audio is intimate. It removes the friction of typing while preserving the spontaneity that makes Twitter special. Our research showed that Twitter users craved deeper conversations than 280 characters could provide.

Design Principles

We established three principles that guided every decision:

  1. Lower the bar, raise the ceiling — Make it effortless to join a Space, but powerful enough for planned events
  2. Conversations, not performances — Design for dialogue, not broadcasting
  3. Safety first — Build moderation tools before building features

Key Design Decisions

The Bubble

We designed the Space "bubble" at the top of the timeline — a persistent, ambient entry point that signaled active conversations without being disruptive. The pulsing animation communicated liveness.

Spatial Layout

Speakers were arranged in a circle, mimicking the physical arrangement of a conversation. This subconsciously encouraged turn-taking and reduced the "stage fright" of linear speaker lists.

Host Controls

We gave hosts intuitive moderation tools: one-tap muting, co-host designation, and audience request management. These were visible but non-intrusive, maintaining the conversational feel.

Impact

  • Launched to 100% of iOS and Android users within 6 months
  • 2M+ Spaces created in the first quarter post-launch
  • Average session duration of 45 minutes — far exceeding tweet engagement
  • Host satisfaction rating of 4.2/5 for moderation tools

Reflections

Building a 0-to-1 product inside a large organization was a masterclass in navigating ambiguity. The biggest lesson was that audio products require fundamentally different design thinking than visual interfaces — you're designing for time, attention, and social dynamics rather than layout and information hierarchy.
