The Challenge
Airbnb's host platform had grown organically over years, resulting in a fragmented experience that made it difficult for new hosts to get started and existing hosts to manage their listings effectively. Host churn was increasing, and satisfaction scores were declining.
My Role
As Design Lead, I owned the end-to-end redesign of the host experience — from initial listing creation through ongoing management. I worked closely with product management, engineering, and data science, leading a team of 4 designers.
The Approach
Research First
We started with extensive research across 8 markets, interviewing over 100 hosts ranging from first-time listers to Superhosts managing 50+ properties. Three key insights emerged:
- New hosts felt overwhelmed by the listing creation flow — too many steps, too much jargon
- Experienced hosts needed power tools but couldn't find them in the existing interface
- All hosts wanted better visibility into their performance and earnings
Design Strategy
Rather than a single massive redesign, we chose a progressive rollout strategy:
- Phase 1: Simplified listing creation (reduce 15 steps to 7)
- Phase 2: Redesigned host dashboard with performance insights
- Phase 3: Power tools for multi-property hosts
Key Design Decisions
Conversational Onboarding
We replaced the form-heavy listing flow with a conversational, step-by-step experience. Each screen focused on a single decision, with smart defaults that reduced cognitive load.
Performance Dashboard
The new dashboard gave hosts at-a-glance visibility into bookings, earnings, and guest reviews. We introduced a "Host Score" that gamified quality improvement.
Adaptive Complexity
The interface adapted to host sophistication — new hosts saw a simplified experience while power users could access advanced features through progressive disclosure.
Impact
- 40% reduction in listing creation abandonment
- 25% increase in host satisfaction scores (NPS)
- 18% increase in listings created per month
- Reduced support tickets by 30% for host-related issues
Reflections
This project taught me the importance of designing for multiple user segments within a single product surface. The progressive disclosure approach became a pattern we applied across other Airbnb experiences. It also reinforced my belief that great design requires deep empathy — spending time in hosts' homes and understanding their daily workflows was invaluable.
